Gear Rentals

Forgot your trekking poles? Didn’t know it was icy at the mountain peak? We’ve got you covered with all the gear basics ready to rent!

The Catskills Visitor Center offers a variety of outdoor gear basics for rent to try out on your next adventure.

Our current offerings are listed below and are subject to change and availability. A rental fee is charged in addition to a deposit which is refunded in full when the equipment is returned in good condition. The current rates and deposit fees are listed below.

At this time we are unable to take reservations for rentals in advance. Rentals are available on a first come, first serve basis. In the event that the rentals you are looking for are not available, our staff will be happy to direct you to other gear shops in the area.

BEAR CANISTERS
  • Available year-round, primarily needed in spring-fall (when bears aren’t hibernating)
  • Keep your food, trash, and other scented items secure from bears and other wildlife

We currently offer:

  • BearVault BV450 (one size, food capacity is 440 cubic inches/approximately 4 days)
TRAIL CRAMPONS
  • Winter rental
  • Fit over your hiking boots/shoes or winter boots
  • Offer traction in icy, snowy, or muddy conditions

We currently offer:

  • Hillsound Trail Crampons (Available in XS, S, M, L, XL – ask a staff member for help finding the best size)

SNOWSHOES
  • Winter rental
  • Allow you to walk on deep snow without sinking
  • Available in both adult and kid sizes:

We currently offer:

  • Adult: MSR Evo Ascent 22 – One size, maximum weight 180lbs/250lbs with tails
  • Kids: MSR Tyker (Fits kids’ shoe sizes 7.5–13.5 / adult sizes 1–4.5, designed for kids up to 90 lbs/41kg)
  • Kids: MSR Shift (for older kids/preteens, designed for kids up to 125lbs/57kg)

TREKKING POLES
  • Winter rental
  • Good for snowshoeing and winter hiking
  • Offer additional stability on snowy or icy terrain
