As one of the leading progressive voices in Congress, Maurice was a tireless defender of the environment and unwavering champion of working people everywhere, fighting to ensure economic fairness and human rights world-wide. His extraordinary work to protect our water, air, land, and food has saved millions of acres and often space for future generations. In retirement, he remained an ardent advocate for America’s natural resources, and an inspiration to all who want to make a positive impact on our world.
Created the Hudson River National Heritage Area and Greenway, giving the region national prominence, and proving to be an effective education, cultural, and economic engine for the entire region.
Changed NYS Conservation Law to allow land conservancies and trusts to protect many thousands of acres of open space
Secured crucial early financial support for what would become the Walkway Over The Hudson, which has attracted more than one million visitors since 2009.
Protected nine million acres of Utah’s Red Rock Wilderness from oil and gas exploration and other development
Primary leader in Congress to protect drinking water and the environment from the risks of fracking (hydraulic fracturing).
Created the first law in the nation to control Acid Rain
Led the fight leading to General Electric’s cleanup of PCB’s from the Hudson River.
Conducted the first investigation into toxic dumping at the Love Canal, leading to a new era of environmental protection.
